Holi festival colours also called Holaka or Phagwa is an annual festival celebrated on the day after the full moon in the Hindu month of Phalguna (early March). It celebrates spring, commemorates various events in Hindu mythology and is time of disregarding social norms and indulging in general merrymaking.

History and Meaning of Holi Festival Colours
Holi festival of colours also commemorates various events in Hindu mythology, but for most Hindus it provides a temporary opportunity for Hindus to disregard social norms, indulge in merrymaking and generally "let loose."
The legend commemorated by the festival of Holi involves an evil king named Hiranyakashipu. He forbade his son Prahlad from worshipping Vishnu, but Radhu continued to do offer prayers to the god. Getting angry with his son, Hiranyakashipu challenged Prahlad to sit on a pyre with his wicked aunt Holika who was believed to be immune to fire.
There is no comprehensive data to know the origins of the festival. However, Holi festival colours as we see it today is believed to have originated in Bengal, where the day was celebrated as Gaudiya Vaishnava festival.
However, there are several mythological stories behind the origins of the festival.
The most popular one is related to the killing of Holika.
Mythology states that when Prahlad disobeyed the orders of Hrinyakashyapu and kept praying for Lord Vishnu, Hrinyakashyapu took the help of her sister, Holika, to kill him.
Holi festival colours took Prahlad in her lap and sat in a bonfire as she had immunity against fire.
However, to everyone's amazement, Holika was burnt alive while Prahlad was unaffected. Thus, Holika Dahan is celebrated a day before Holi.
In large parts of India, the festival is celebrated with a lot of colors, water balloons and water guns.
